The hallway of doors is a terrific central image because it works as supernatural transportation, a map of Wyatt\u2019s memory, and a reminder of all the choices he can\u2019t make again. Once Emma understands that they\u2019re both dead and that Wyatt has become trapped in an in-between world shaped by dementia and grief, her mission is heartbreakingly clear: she has returned to help the man she loved recognize his life and let it go. The ending earns its sentiment because Wyatt doesn\u2019t simply recover a few happy memories. Bass&#8217;s writing goes down as smooth like King&#8217;s, too.
